Q&A: I found a tick on my testicles could this be lyme disease?

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Question by Josh: I found a tick on my testicles could this be lyme disease?
Now, the area there is a little bump, and part of my penis there is a rash that itches. We went camping and that’s how i got it, there also i got TONS of mosquito bites. What should i do?

I did not pull the tick out, i found it during school and when me and my mom went to pull it out, it wasn’t there

Best answer:

Answer by azrielle
Probably not, the skin in that area is really sensitive, so any little irritation like a small tick bite could make you itch and cause that area to swell up. If you have any other symptoms like fever, muscle or joint aches, etc, go see your doctor.

I’m 14, could I have diabetes?

Friday, November 18th, 2011

Question by Jannet h: I’m 14, could I have diabetes?
I’ve always had stomach problems and nausea since I was little, but I’m 14 now and so much more is going on. I get extremely dizzy, my mouth is pretty dry, I’m really sore everywhere, my chest hurts, my arms and legs are tingly and I feel like I’m shaking, I haven’t been sleeping well, I always feel like I could vomit, and I have terrible headaches. I kinda feel like i have to go to the bathroom more but that could be from drinking a lit more fluids. went to the doctor today and they want to test me for lime disease and mono, but I really think I should be tested for diabetes. They also said I had a 100 degree fever and that my throat was red. I am also not hungry, I’ve always been skinny but I never really ate good foods. Could this be diabetes? Also, I just had an endoscopy done, would they have tested me for diabetes when I went there alreay? Thanks!

Q&A: Could Neuropathy actually just be muscle Tightness??

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Question by Tye S: Could Neuropathy actually just be muscle Tightness??
I recently had a pretty serious viral respiratory infection. At the time prior to that I was power lifting a significant amount of weight. As the infection resolved i was getting Neuropathy in my fingers on both sides and sciatica in my right leg. Being scared that this might be something more serious I got checked into a hospital. They checked me for stroke symptoms, Lupus, Lime Disease, Diabetes and MS, which all came back negative. In a recent visit with the Neurologist he said I might have peripheral neuropathy and stress which is expanding my symptoms. I am getting an EMG to see how my nerves are conducting signals next week. I am just wondering if my nerve pain might just be tightness in my muscles or tendons that are compressing some nerves. I did have the pain in my fingers a few months ago when lifting but that gradually resolved. If so, could stretching more be the simple solution to my problems or should I be more concerned. I have not lifted since than by the way.

Best answer:

Answer by mgnysgtcappo
peripheral neuropathy wouldn’t feel like muscle tightness. Many people report a tingling, loss of ability to control the affected muscle and pain. The EMG should show how the nerves are sending messages to the brain. Why would you have muscle tightness that has lasted this long? That doesn’t make any sense either. I think your neurologist is probably on to something.

I wish you good Luck

Could It Be Lyme Disease?

Could It Be Lyme Disease?

A dismayed grandmother said her precious grandson was diagnosed and treated as autistic–when, in fact, he has lyme disease. She reports that a recent study said 90% of California kids diagnosed with autism actually had lyme.

Then she asked the jackpot question: How come doctors don’t know better?

The sorry answer? Because people who should know better–and certainly care better–made this dreadful disease a political football, not a diagnosis.

Even worse, they’ve kept it quiet. You’ve probably never heard of lyme disease. So, let’s talk.

With a mountain of symptoms, some of which can be vague, Lyme doesn’t fit the delicatessen-counter, take-a-number approach now used in medicine.

And medical education comes up way short. What little doctors are taught includes the “fact” that there’s always a rash. No, there isn’t.

The fact is, you need to educate yourself to protect yourself.

Lyme is carried by deer ticks, which can appear to be no more than an easily-overlooked, small, black dot. You might spot a full-grown tick, but a baby tick–called a nymph–is all but invisible. Besides, who checks every inch of their body upon coming indoors? Or does a self strip search after playing with the dog?

]]>

It’s a growing problem–soon to be a plague if it continues to be politicized. It’s in every state in the United States. Whether or not you know about lyme disease, it’s almost surely in your neighborhood. Even in the concrete canyons of Manhattan.

Lyme disease isn’t some quick, little, stay in bed for a couple of days deal. You know something’s seriously wrong. You just don’t know what.

Besides such symptoms as swollen glands, fevers, sore throat, joint swelling,, and on, and on, lyme disease mimics a lot of the symptoms of endocrine problems–extreme fatigue, foggy thinking, mood swings, unexplained weight gain or loss, muscle pain, loss of libido, etc.

And in fact, the two can become one. Lyme disease can damage the pituitary gland, which controls the entire endocrine system. Then you have another significant problem. And while the lyme may or may not become a chronic condition, pituitary damage usually does.

Lyme sufferers need prompt, effective treatment, but this is problematic. First, you have to suspect that’s your problem. Then, convince your doctor to test. Then, if your doctor lacks experience with lyme, find a doctor who knows the deal. Don’t be any doctor’s first lyme patient; by-the-book treatments don’t work.

Well, now that I’ve scared your socks off, let me offer a little help. You can get good information about lyme disease–symptoms, tests, treatments, etc.–at http://PublicHealthAlert.org They also cover other perplexing chronic illnesses.

I have no connection with Public Health Alert. My good friend, Suzanne Brand, a long-time lyme-disease sufferer, recommended them to me. Suzanne’s a smart, tenacious and honest RN; I trust what she says, and Suzanne says these people offer good information –and no politics.

Bette Dowdell is not a doctor, nor does she purport to be one. She’s a patient who’s been studying the endocrine system and successfully handling her own endocrine problems for more than 30 years. Through her e-zine, teleseminars and an in-depth subscription program, Bette explains how the endocrine system works–or doesn’t, discusses things that damage the endocrine system, and talks about what we can do to improve our health. Subscribe to Bette’s free e-zine at http://TooPoopedToParticipate.com and get a list of the kind of symptoms she’s talking about.

While I’m not a doctor, it does sound like Lyme is a very real possibility. I’ve had Lyme Disease for nearly twenty years and have experienced several of the same symptoms are you have described. Lyme can cause a lot of different symptoms because there are over 300 strains of the disease… not to mention the fact many patients are also infected with various co-infections such as Bartonella, Babesia, Ehrlichia, etc.

What tests did they run? My guess is they would have run the ELISA blood test first and then “confirmed” the result by running a Western Blot through Quest or some other lab. If this is indeed how you were tested, there are several problems… First, the ELISA produces many false negatives and is highly unreliable. Second, the CDC’s surveillance guidelines included many non-Lyme-specific bands but exclude several bands only found in Lyme patients. Essentially this means that someone can test postive by CDC standards and not have Lyme at all or test negative and be very ill from Lyme.

The most important thing for you to do is find a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor (LLMD) in your area and get evaluated. Many doctors (including Infectious Disease specialists) are not very knowledgeable about Lyme, it’s diagnosis and it’s treatment. Four weeks of oral antibiotics are rarely effective, especially in patients who have had Lyme for some time. Often, patients require many months to years of aggressive therapy to improve.

www.lymediseaseassociation.org and www.ilads.org are both very good sites that can direct you to a specialist in your area. They can also give you more information about Lyme.

Most importantly, you have to trust your gut. You know your body better than anyone else – even doctors – so if something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t.

Best of luck!

How sick could this make me..?

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Question by JellyBean Hippos: How sick could this make me..?
My boyfriend stayed home all last week from school because he had Broncitus (don’t know how to spell these things), an ear infection, and either lime disease or west nile in his neck. He went to the doctor last Monday and I stayed at his house from last Friday and left on Monday morning. I started getting a cold around Tuesday-ish bt now my back and neck hurts, my ears hurt, my head hurts, stomach, and still kind of cold things. Is it possible that I could have ended up with the same thing as him? Is there any other illnesses that have these symptoms?? My mom is making a doctor apointment today after work but I don’t want to go because I’m scared of needles and I cry when I get shots, is there a way that I won’t cry infront of anyone while there doing it?

Best answer:

Answer by tanbabycakes
You might of contracted whatever combination of things your boyfriend had unfortunately we cannot help you too much unless you go and see that doctor! Dont worry about the needles, usually they just prick your finger to draw blood these days. Oh and they have seen it ALL im sure, you wouldnt be the first to be afraid to go to the doctors. Just look at it this way, they’ll prick your finger, do some tests and give you some meds to cure whatever ailments you have. Simple right? Good luck!
