Q&A: Can a dog eat a deer carcass?

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

Question by TC: Can a dog eat a deer carcass?
My dog has found a deer carcass in the woods. Apparently someone had went hunting and cleaned the deer and then threw it out in the woods near my house. My dog has found the top half of the deer and brought it to the porch like a trophy to show it off. The worst part is I carried the deer off into the woods and cleaned the porch but he continues to bring it back we have been going threw this for over a week. Its snowing outside here and he has made a huge mess with it. He has eaten its face tore its legs off and most of its fur it barley resembles a deer now and I do not want to pick up the pieces and dispose of it anymore. It is by far the most disgusting thing I have ever done. Someone told me that it could make the dog sick. I assumed that it was natural and their instinct to do things like this and that he could handle digesting it. Someone else told me that dogs can get lime disease from eating deer. Is this harmful to my dog?

Q&A: Deer tick head still embedded near cats eye…?

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Question by Wow: Deer tick head still embedded near cats eye…?
When I removed it, it was teeny tiny, and did not move, I assumed it was dead, but upon closer examination realised I hadn’t got the head out, Its right underhis eye in the corner, too close to suffocate w/ peanut butter or anything… I put neosporin over it, but cat wiped it all off. What should I do? Will my cat die of lime disease?

Best answer:

Answer by Sandra A
I’d take your cat to the vet. They’ll probably test it for Lyme disease once they get it out, bc you can’t tell just by looking at it. Either way though, you should take her to the vet. She could get an infection and still get sick. Good luck.

What is the percentage of nymph deer ticks that carry lyme disease?

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Question by agoosa: What is the percentage of nymph deer ticks that carry lyme disease?
Just went to Corolla, NC. We had a towel in the car that turned out to have LOTS of deer tick nymphs on it! (it was white!) Have not found ticks on kids but they are SO SMALL I could miss one. What percentage of nymphs carry lyme? And does anyone know if Lyme has been reported in Nags Head/Corolla NC areas?

Best answer:

Answer by Dekayel
The infection rate changes depending on where you are. But be advised, nymphal ticks CAN transmit the disease. Get out your magnifying glass and give those darlings a thorough going-over, paying special attention to the hairline. Stay alert to any changes in physical condition in the coming weeks–rashes, fevers, headaches, general flu-ish feelings.

Can you get Lyme Disease from eating an infected deer?

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

Question by Ashley: Can you get Lyme Disease from eating an infected deer?
My boyfriend and I are interested in hunting in an area where Lyme Disease is very prevalent and would like to be able to eat the deer meat. Will we be okay as long as the meat is cooked well?

Best answer:

Answer by michele
No.

Deer are a dead-end tick vector. Although lyme-carrying ticks feed on deer, the deer themselves do not become infected.

p.s. If you plan to hunt in a Lyme endemic area, be ABSOULTELY SURE to protect yourself adequately. A great hunting trip is not worth a lifetime of struggling with Lyme or other tick borne diseases.

It would be impossible to know unless we tested every tick. You can learn more about it from the FDA:
