DS: Anti-itch for a dog’s mosquito bites?

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Question by Almost Bulletproof Heart: DS: Anti-itch for a dog’s mosquito bites?
So I take poor little Rock out with me in the yard so I can get clothes in from the line and BAM! She’s got bites ALL OVER her legs and some on her torso. I sprayed her before I took her for our nightly walk and put her doggy jacket on so they wouldn’t get through that.

Anyways, there must be about 60 or so bug bites on all four her legs. I’m wondering if there is some sort of anti-itch I can use (anything common found around the home, all shops are closed now) to relieve the itchiness for tonight. She’s being a trooper and not really complaining or scratching at the bites, but I know they must bother her at least a little bit.

Also, this is really important- does bug spray actually WORK on dogs? It’s Off! Family Care Smooth & Dry. Another thing… is heartguard going to prevent lime disease? What are the possibilities of Rock getting lime disease from these bug bites? And what are the signs and symptoms of lime disease?

I’m going to be talking to my vet about this tomorrow, but I would really like to know what I can do for Rock right now. Your answers are very appreciated.

Heartgard protects against heartworm. It does not protect against Lyme disease, but you don’t have to worry about that, because Lyme disease comes from ticks, not mosquitoes.

I can’t imagine why the Off! wouldn’t work on a dog.

What happens to dogs with lyme disease?

Sunday, January 16th, 2011

Question by BustinD: What happens to dogs with lyme disease?
My dog appears to have develpoed the red bulls eye on her belly, but i am going out of town for 4 days and need to know if she will be ok for that long. She has a vet appt scheduled for 6 days from now, and when she is not hooked on the line she seems to run well, and hasn’t shyed from eating. Do you think she is ok, or should she go to the vet immedietly?

I have read that after about 3 – 4 days the bacteria is seen in the blood. Then if you can treat your dog with antibiotics appropriate for Lyme Disease early, then it might take care of the disease. But if you delay a long time, then it can cause damage to organs and joints.

Call your Vet and ask if they can do a blood test and if it is good to do it now.

How does lyme disease affect dogs?

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Question by Philips G: How does lyme disease affect dogs?
I am usually great about checking my dog for ticks, but one day I missed one, noticed it about 3 days later.. I took him to the vet and she says his blood showed semi high “levels”
What did she mean? What can I expect.. how will this affect him?

She gave me Doxycycline and I’ve been giving him these tabs once a day for about 3 weeks now. Will he be okay?

Best answer:

Answer by lizzy
Lethargy, joint pain, swollen joints, intermittent fever. Doxy is the treatment of choice. Most dogs do very well with treatment, some become chronic cases but it’s rare. If you read up on human lymes disease, its pretty much the same for dogs.

Is limping a sign of lyme disease relapse in dogs?

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Question by crazeehelper: Is limping a sign of lyme disease relapse in dogs?
My dog has been limping for three weeks now. At first thought he had strained his leg playing with a group of dogs, but it has not gone away. It has been 10 months since he was initially diagnosed and 8 months since he was lyme free.
Anything else I should look for? Please help. I am worried Mom.

I read that there is a school of thought that Lyme’s disease is never completely cured — sorry to say.

Answer by coooooooooooooooooooooool
Infected dogs may be lethargic, have a poor/loss of appetite, or a fever (103° – 105 ° F). Dogs may also experience lameness shifting from one joint to another, fatigue, kidney damage or failure, heart disorders, or neurologic involvement (e.g. aggression, confusion, overeating, seizures). Dogs can be infected with the Lyme bacterium but not exhibit any noticeable symptoms. Dogs appear to have the same expression of disease as humans, therefore, humans have been considered an animal model for dogs. Transplacental transmission has occurred in dogs.
