I think I’ve been infected with Y2K. Does anyone know the symptoms?

Question by Steve R: I think I’ve been infected with Y2K. Does anyone know the symptoms?
Or maybe it’s swine flu, avian flu, west nile virus, lime tick disease, flesh eating virus or killer bees. How do I know which media frenzy has gotten the best of me? Oh wait, it’s a pedophile online trying to get into my pants.

You, definitely, exhibit all the symptoms of either Y2K or possibly you’re experiencing a “MAC ATTACK”…Take two Tylenol (caps) try and get some rest, and if in the morning it’s 1982, give my office a call. That’s 867-5309…ask for Tommy.

As far as I know, having a drink of orange juice won’t cause you any problem. Quitting smoking and not drinking too much caffeine or alcohol may make you feel better. But if you have been diagnosed with peptic ulcer caused by infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria, you will need treatment with antibiotic medications to kill the bacteria.
Medications that reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach are used to treat all forms of peptic ulcer disease.

Can you get Lyme Disease from eating an infected deer?

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

Question by Ashley: Can you get Lyme Disease from eating an infected deer?
My boyfriend and I are interested in hunting in an area where Lyme Disease is very prevalent and would like to be able to eat the deer meat. Will we be okay as long as the meat is cooked well?

No.

Deer are a dead-end tick vector. Although lyme-carrying ticks feed on deer, the deer themselves do not become infected.

p.s. If you plan to hunt in a Lyme endemic area, be ABSOULTELY SURE to protect yourself adequately. A great hunting trip is not worth a lifetime of struggling with Lyme or other tick borne diseases.

Q&A: What would be found if antibodies from people not infected with Lyme disease were exposed to Lyme bacteria?

Question by belleswan: What would be found if antibodies from people not infected with Lyme disease were exposed to Lyme bacteria?
And also, kind of related, if an uninfected person were injected with Lyme disease bacteria, what would happen?

I don’t think you really know what antibodies are and how they occur. When a foreign organism – and we can use the spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, that causes Lyme – enters the body, this bacteria has a protein on its surface. This protein is called an antigen. Let’s assume this is the first time this body has ever encountered the spirochete.

The body recognizes the protein (antigen) as foreign. Lymphocytes, one type of white blood cell, produce antibodies, a type of immunglobulin, another protein. These antibodies are specific to the antigens that triggered their production in the first place.

Antibodies work in various ways. Some bind to the antigen, the protein on the bacterial surface and start a chain reaction that ultimately causes harm to the bacteria or protects the host body. Other antibodies bind to white cells and activate their individual functions as part of the immune response.

So, to answer your first question (go back and read it again), nothing. Whatever antibodies you used would not have been produced specifically for the antigen on the spirochete bacteria. Without infection, no antigen-specific antibodies. Understand?

To answer your second question, you have only to read my explanation of antibodies and antigens.

My dog had two ticks on him. How likely is it that he is now infected with lyme disease or another disease?

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Question by Kaylin Adamo: My dog had two ticks on him. How likely is it that he is now infected with lyme disease or another disease?
I am a first time dog owner and did not notice he had two ticks on him for two weeks! I feel horrible! I know where he got it from , so i know it was two weeks ago.He has really long hair so it was hard to see them. How likely is it that he has lyme disease or another disease from the tick?? And is it possible that they are now in my house?!

The early signs of Lyme disease in dogs are supposed to be loss of appetite, fever and lethargy. Lameness may occur at the same time or may occur later. In some dogs, enlargement of the lymph nodes (usually generalized enlargement) occurs. In dogs, skin signs, heart disease, kidney problems and neurologic signs are reported to be rare. Symptoms of Lyme disease are usually delayed for several months but start to occur about 2 months after exposure and should show up by 5 to 6 months after a dog or cat is bitten by a tick carrying the bacteria (Borrelia burgdorferi).

I am hoping you won’t have to deal with this problem but it would be a good idea to keep an eye out for telltale symptoms and to write down the date of the tick removal so you don’t forget when it was, just in case.

Ticks like damp, shady areas. They live under layers of fallen leaves and in tall unmowed grass. Cut the tick population around your home this fall by removing piles of leaves in shaded areas around shrubs, under decks, and along fences and walls. Remove leaves and the remains of summer plants, weeds, and other debris from flower beds. Don’t stack wood for a fireplace right next to or against your house. Stack wood off the ground and in racks in a dry location if possible. Keep lawns mowed and edges trimmed. Clean up around bird feeders so mice, chipmunks, and squirrels are not drawn to the area…rodents attract ticks and fleas.

To help control a thriving tick population, spray grassy areas around your house with a pet-safe flea and tick repellent. If the infestation is severe, hire a professional pest control service.
