Q&A: Questions about lyme disease/deer ticks?

Question by James :) : Questions about lyme disease/deer ticks?
Okay.. I recently had what looked to be a mole but I know believe was a tick on my butt. Now it might have been a scab from previous itching but it was able to come off and then it grew back. I yanked it off and it bled and then it came back… so I assumed it was a mole. But now it’s gone. I didn’t yank it off it’s just gone. I always had suspicions it may have been a tick. During all that time frame… a circular rash began to develop. Eucerine seemed to help but didn’t completely do the trick… then I was given some ointment and the rash has been rapidly declining and now it’s basically gone. Close up you can see somewhat remains of it. But the fact that it was there worries me a little bit… can ointment cure a “bulls-eye” rash caused by lime disease or would nothing be able to? I don’t have any other symptoms. I don’t have joint pain, fever, fatigue, or flu like symptoms. If it helps the rash was on BOTH buttcheeks… (Let’s be mature) but yeah was it lyme disease or was it just a rash? Please help put my mind at ease… :)

If a tick was involved anything is possible. Did you explain what happened to a doctor? You may want to let him or her know about the rash you had. A Lyme titer and Western Blot can be done to see if you are positive or negative for Lyme (although there are false negatives). Watch for other symptoms such as flu-like symptoms or things just don’t seem right over time.

Question by cindy: Questions on treatment using Doxycycline for Lyme Disease?
I have recently been diagnosed with Lyme Disease… My doctor has prescribed Doxycycline @ 100 mg twice daily for two weeks. I was wondering how long it’s going to take for it to kick in and help the pain subside? I think I am in the second stage of the disease. I have slight swelling in my knees and pain in my shoulders and knees… More tired and exhausted everyday… Thanks in advance!

The “standard” treatment for Lyme in this country is two weeks of doxycycline, as you describe. Unfortunately, many people find that the standard treatment isn’t enough to get them well. Many find that longer treatment with doxy, or with different drugs, is what is needed. The standard treatment is “one size fits all,” and if that ain’t your size, you are out of luck.

Recommend you read up on Lyme disease at the following websites, and then try to find an ILADS-affiliated doctor who will treat you according to what YOU need, not what the one-size-fits-all guidelines say.

www.therenegadehealthshow.com – In this episode I wanted to address some of your comments on Tuesday’s Lyme disease show… There were over 100 comments and I think it’s important to address some of them in this show, particularly the first issue that I bring up. Since I’ve never been “ill” with anything before, I now realize in a much more compounded way (since thousands of people have watched the show and given me advice) how confused people can get if they’re dealing with an illness. I also address if healthy people can get sick. Go ahead and take a look…
