Lyme Disease – Lovette’s Story : Ticked Off and Fed Up

Monday, July 25th, 2011

What is Lyme Disease? Lyme disease is a devastating neurological and rheumatological disease, caused by a tick bite, which robs its victims of memory, and can leave them with an inability to form sentences. Lyme disease leads to multi-symptom complications, including heart disease, joint swelling, fatigue, and a life of severe pain. In the midst of all this suffering, the medical community is ill-equipped to deal with the incapacitating disease, with victims often going to 20 or 30 doctors before a proper diagnosis is made. At that late stage, Lyme disease victims are often placed on long term IV therapy. ****The following short clips are the stories and personal experiences shared by members of the Gettysburg Lyme Disease Support Group. They were taken with the permission of Lyme victims who volunteered to tell their stories at the Gettysburg Lyme Support Group, which meets the first Sunday of each month in the Community Room, through the graciousness of the Gettysburg Hospital. The information provided here is for informational, educational and entertainment purposes only. It is NOT intended to replace, and should not be interpreted or relied upon as medical or professional advice. We are victims of tick borne illnesses, and any advice from those in the medical profession are given as advice from their perspectives as patients themselves, and/or from treating a large number of patients, but NOT as medical advice. Lyme Disease: One Man’s Story

Lyme disease is that unseen destroyer of lives. Each year tens of thousands are diagnosed with the disease—a number that represents one-tenth of those actually infected. It has been called “the great imitator” because the disease mimics nearly 350 other diseases. Unknown—or perhaps just ignored—are those whose lives are disrupted, devalued and left behind. This book is for them. This book is for all those who have questions regarding the effects of Lyme disease. It is for the families, the friends and the infected. This is the story of one man’s ongoing struggle to overcome.

But Polly began to be plagued by mysterious ailments, and as the rest of her family started to experience similar symptoms, she knew something was terribly wrong. When doctor after doctor failed to explain what was happening to them, Polly was forced to confront disbelief, lack of caring, and, eventually, apathy on the part of the medical establishment, all the while suffering herself.
