Are there any doctors around Columbus, OH that treat lyme disease?

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Question by curious K: Are there any doctors around Columbus, OH that treat lyme disease?
It seems that the medical community in Ohio is turning a blind eye to individuals that have lyme disease. Do they believe that deer do not cross state lines? Do they believe that if they say it is bogus, it will go away? It is a shame that people have to go to the east coast for treatment since Ohio doctors won’t treat them. Is there an Ohio doctor that will treat this horrid condition.

There are no supplements that I am aware of, but there are antibiotics that can speed the healing of the rash and may prevent arthritis and neurologic symptoms. These include doxycycline, Ceftin or amoxicillin. She may try taking some Tylenol or Ibuprofen if she is experiencing muscle aches and headaches.

Is there a possibility for this to be something other than Lyme Disease in my horse?

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

Question by Owned by Maggie ?: Is there a possibility for this to be something other than Lyme Disease in my horse?
My horse is:
~Irritable (grumpy, grouchy)
~Unwilling to move forward
~Tired
And she just tested positive for Lyme Disease. However, she may have had Lyme earlier in life, though it IS possible she has just gotten it from a tick. I have heard from a number of people that after a horse has Lyme once, they will always test positive. So is it possible for my horse to have something other than Lyme?
No fever.
No lameness.
Just the above symptoms. For further explanation of the unwillingness to go… She will be trotting along then just want to stop. After she stops, she does NOT want to go again.

The biggest symptom of lymes is lameness. Fever is also possible. Often the lameness will shift from leg to leg and may (in extreme cases) lead to laminitis. The horse also appears very stiff. Irritability and behavioral changes can also be expected. So while it sounds like your mare is showing SOME symptoms, she is not showing all of the symptoms… Which leads to believe that yes, it could be something else.

Question by sarah_fuller: Is there conclusinve research linking autism in children to a lyme disease history in the mother?
I have had lyme disease twice and now have been diagnosed with antiphospholipid syndrome. I’m wondering about a connection between these diseases and autism, which I’ve heard may be related.

Is there any way to prevent lyme disease in humans?

Question by Emilie Rogers: Is there any way to prevent lyme disease in humans?
My brother was just diagnosed with lyme disease and I was curious if there was a way to prevent it… I know you can use tick spray and after being out in the woods checking for ticks but i was wondering if there was any other way?

There is no other way to prevent Lyme disease other than to prevent tick bites. Once you’ve been bitten by a tick carrying Lyme disease, it gets into your bloodstream and can infect you. Most people who are bitten by a Lyme-carrying tick will develop the illness, whether shortly thereafter or in several months (or even years’) time, though some don’t. The ones who don’t are just naturally resistant to the disease, even if they carry it around in their bloodstream.

The best ways to prevent tick bites are to avoid tick infested areas like dense forests, keep your arms and legs covered if possible, and wear bug repellent. For women, keeping your hair pulled back can also be helpful because it’s harder for a tick to crawl into your hair if it’s pulled back tightly into a ponytail, bun, or braids. Not all ticks carry Lyme disease, but particularly in the South it is fairly prevalent so the best thing you can do is just try not to get bit at all.
