Q&A: tick head removal in a dog body is off head might be attached?

Question by Kimberly: tick head removal in a dog body is off head might be attached?
My daughter had noticed that my dog had this thing by his ear. it was huge and it was greenish white in color. She pulled it off and showed me here it was a tick. i could not tell if the head was with it or not seeming that it had black colored slimy stuff coming from where the head should be. I looked at the spot where she had pulled it. Of course its all puffy and I can not tell if there is a head there. I do not have the money for a vet and if I did it’s the holiday weekend. Can someone tell me how am I to know if there is a head under that skin and how can I remove the head my self ? I had used tweezers to poke around and I still cannot see anything. I am afraid by the look of it that there possibly is a head underneath. It does not look irritated nor does it appear to have the bulls eye look of lime disease
how will i know if my dog gets lymes before i can get him to the vet

put some clear nail polish on it and it should fall off on its own.

What percent of people bitten by a tick develop lyme disease?

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

Question by Mike G: What percent of people bitten by a tick develop lyme disease?
Does anyone have a link to definitive medical research on the specific question? Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Dekayel
If the tick isn’t infected, than the person who gets bitten won’t catch anything. Are you asking how many people bitten by INFECTED ticks actually get sick? That may depend upon whether the tick was removed before it could transmit the bacteria–or not. May also depend upon how strong your personal immune system is. More useful questions are: have you been bitten by a tick? Do you think you might have LYme disease? If so, get it checked out.

I had a tick on me [twenty char thing]…?

Question by ViviBear: I had a tick on me [twenty char thing]…?
Okay so over the weekend I went north to visit my grandma. While I was there I and my cousin were in the woods and I managed to get to ticks on me. One was on my arm and the other in my belly button. Well I not being a tick removing expert didn’t squeeze them off I just pulled them off. Well I’ve heard that by doing it that way can leave the heads in. And I’ve now learned from various people that by doing so can cause some lovely things like lime disease and infection.

How can I be sure that I did get the heads off? Any signs that the head is still there? Or what does it look like if the head is there? What do I do if in fact it is still there?

Answer by Jessica555
Most likely your not going to get lyme disease, unless the tick was on you for longer than 24 hours. If you have a rash around where the tick was than you should go to the doctor, but your probably ok. My sister had a few on her and we looked it up on the internet. You’ll probably find more info on a site than these yahoo answers.

My daughter got big by a tick a few weeks ago. Now it is hurting her. Ideas?

Question by Michelle: My daughter got big by a tick a few weeks ago. Now it is hurting her. Ideas?
We went for a walk by the woods a few weeks ago and my 7 yr old woke up with a tick in her ear the next morning. My boyfriend removed it with tweezers while I kept her calm. It looked like we got the whole thing.

I think it was a Lone Star tick, which doesn’t carry lime disease. But this weekend she started complaining (almost crying) about her ear hurting. It is getting a little red (maybe from her rubbing it?) and there is a very small bump where the tick was attached.
It seems like almost everywhere I look, I see different advice on how they are supposed to be moved. Heat, nail polish, scrape with a knife … Tweezers sounded like the least traumatic for my 7 yr old.

But I am curious … If this happens again, how would you remove it?
Thanks fototag (and crashholstad)… I will call her doctor Monday morning and see if they can squeeze her in.

sounds like some of the tick got leaft there. ou arent supposed to remove them with tweesers cause there legs are barbed and will get stuck in the skin. Its sounds like it infected

Tick bite. i have a question?

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Question by Steph:]: Tick bite. i have a question?
I had a tick in my leg i pulled it out maybe 3 days ago. I dont know how long it was in there.
Im 15.
It was one of the little tiny ticks.
Anyway.
Right where the bite was there is a little bump now. Its not quite like a mosquito bit its smaller. it did itch for a few minutes, thats how i noticed it.
So i guess my question is do they lay eggs in your skin when they burry themselves in your skin???
ive had a bigger tick in my shoulder before and had antibiotics n stuff for lime disease. But nothing ever happend.
plz help

No they dont leg eggs in you when they bite you. If it has been three days I would think you were safe. Watch the area for swelling redness etc. Let your parents know it happened but that it looks ok. Just keep a close eye on it.

Q&A: tick bite scar that won’t go away after 3 months?

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Question by pearl: tick bite scar that won’t go away after 3 months?
I had a tick bite over 3 months ago. I did not know how long it was attached to me. I called the doctor and got a blood test 6 weeks after being bitten, and luckily no lime disease was found. But the scar is always there. The inner circle of the scar is dark and about a pea size, surrounded by a lighter dark circle about half an inch in diameter. The whole area is harden, and itching like crazy sometimes. Does anyone know if this is common and is there any cream to treat this. The bite mark is on my leg and it looks so disgusting when I wear short :( Thanks!

I dont think thats an scar… It seems like an internal injury thats healing itself.

Pet Friendly Tick Removal From My Yard?

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Question by Greta Leigh: Pet Friendly Tick Removal From My Yard?
I live in the woods. My house & most of the 2 acre yard are on a cleared lot but we are surrounded by spruce, elm & pine trees and a pond. There are bugs everywhere! That’s to be expected but I’d like to treat the cleared area immediately surrounding the house where the dogs & kids are allowed to play.

Specifically I’m looking for chemicals, not home remedies. I don’t have any specialty agriculture stores nearby. I’m talking about going to Home Depot or Walmart and getting something that anybody can handle applying.

Thanks!!

Oh, and the dogs have been treated themselves FYI. I entertain & don’t want to hear about how so&so got lime disease from coming over for burgers :)
Just a note to the 3rd ANSWER… I live in New England and it’s extremely wet here right now with the thaw and the snow melt. (ps, we have no grass right now) I have 2 dogs and in the past week have removed several ticks from both of them. And this morning there was a tick in my bedroom. I treated the dogs last night and assume the tick I found in my room was on 1 of the dogs, got a taste of the flea & tick treatment and jumped right off.

Ticks get on the dogs every summer, all summer. And they get on us. Maybe that has been your experience out west, but here it’s a different story. Thanks for the information anyway!

Keep your entertainment area lawn cut short and watered. Ticks like to climb up on foot high foliage.
Pyrethrins Pesticides made from chrysanthemums aka mums, are the most effective in killing ticks.
Also, Diatomaceious earth can be sprinkled around the area too, It kills fleas & ticks.
You can buy these at any Home Depot, Lowe’s, or hardware store.
