Question about ticks and lyme disease?

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Question by : Question about ticks and lyme disease?
My son was tested for lyme disease today. The doctor is pretty sure that’s what he has because of the rash on his face.

My question is: Don’t ticks put their head in your skin and fill up on blood? I’m sure I would have noticed a tick hanging off of his face, so how would he have contracted it?

Some are so small they are hardly noticeable. Once they fill up with blood they usually drop off and this could have happened overnight and you missed it. At least he will get treatment before the symptoms get bad.

How can I eliminate the ticks in my area…or at least around my property?

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

Question by Chris C: How can I eliminate the ticks in my area…or at least around my property?
Is there a way to get rid of ticks in the area? My house is surrounded by woods and a creek runs next to my house. The past couple summers, my children have had to have ticks removed…several times. We have a dog which we have treated with medicine to repel ticks. I have seen them in my house…perhaps they ride in on the dog and fall off (i don’t know). I have heard that the amount of ticks are proportionate to the amount of deer in the area…and there is a lot (Upstate NY). Every time the kids go outside to play, I wonder if they are going to get a tick on them..its crazy. It like we are playing Russian roulette with lime disease. Any help would be grateful.

I had a tick problem at my house last year and it was horrible so I feel your pain. You can always call and exterminator but that can be expensive. I took a cheaper route that worked pretty well. Your local hardware store should have some bug bombs and sprays. You want to look for the ones that exterminate ticks.

I used the bug bombs in the house first to get rid of the ticks that were already inside. Note: There are special safety precautions to take with these so make sure you read the label carefully. Also it requires you to leave your house for a few hours. Then I had my neighbors husband spray down our front and back yard with the tick spray. The people at the hardware store were very helpful and said that should work but if it didn’t then to do it a second time. Edit: It worked the first time for me. I have a pretty small three bedroom house.

If you do end up doing this and it doesn’t work then I’d definitely call an exterminator. Ticks are stubborn! Best wishes!

Oh and if they are ANY AT ALL in your house you need to do something ASAP. They could be carrying eggs/larva on their backs and when they hatch you will be in tick hell.

Q&A: Home remedies/solutions to get ticks off & stay off my dog?

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Question by victoria: Home remedies/solutions to get ticks off & stay off my dog?
I live in the country and my dog and I spend a lot of time in the woods. Lately, I’ve been finding 5-10 ticks on my dog each day, which is insane because last tick season, we would only find about 1-3 a week.
I’ve tried Frontline, Advantix, every single tick treatment you can buy.
I also took her to the vet to get her lime disease vaccination. The vet said that the vaccination would make all of the ticks that bit her, fall off and die, but it hasn’t worked.
I recently put more Frontline on her, but the ticks keep coming & some of them are so small, getting them off (with tweezers) is a huge challenge. I’ve tried getting them off, but they’re really latched on, & I just keep pulling my poor dogs’ hair. Is there anything else I can try that works?
I already took her to the vet, & they said giving her the vaccination was the best way to keep them off of her. I’m not wasting money & going back to the vet, so they can just tell me that the shot they gave my dog works & there’s nothing else they can do.

Question by If you know he loves you!: Ticks: save a life and help me!?
I was at my cousins house in north borough and unlucky me it was tick season. I got one on my arm but pushed it off at least that’s what i thought. What are the affects of ticks. How long does it take to take your blood and get you bad things like lime disease? I was playing on a trampoline like a little kid [giggle] which was under trees but i think i was careful. Can a bath take them off? I took a shower A.S.A.P. I just wanna know that I don’t have to worry =]

Tick bites are generally painless. You may not even notice the bite. And you may never find the tick if it falls off. Small ticks, like the deer tick that transmits Lyme disease, are so tiny they may be nearly undetectable. Some ticks are about as small as the period at the end of this sentence.

The actual bite may cause symptoms only after the tick drops off. You may notice local redness, itching, and burning-and, rarely, localized intense pain. The results of the illnesses transmitted by ticks often begin days to weeks after the tick is gone. That’s why doctors may not suspect a tick-related illness.

You may have any of these symptoms:
Feel as if you have the flu
Fever
Numbness
Rash
Confusion
Weakness
Pain and swelling in joints
Palpitations
Shortness of breath
Nausea and vomiting

Hope this helps. : (
